Quite a few things we had to accomplish today before going to the race track to get checked in: Power wash the car for the stickers, camping supplies, misc car stuff, food/drinks, spare wheels. Since we just got the car back we didn’t have any camping supplies and miscellaneous things we needed to pick up. It’s pretty boring so I’m not going to get into all of it. It took us about 5 hours to do what we could have done in 2 stops back in the States. Academy Sports and Outdoors and Autozone and we’re set. Instead we had to go back and forth between towns trying to find something like bungee straps that should have been at the store we were currently at. The spare tires seemed like they were gonna be a headache. The first place we stopped at had the biggest collection of tires I’ve ever seen, and yet somehow don’t have our pretty generic size. Same place also told us to pound sand about a roof rack, so I think they just like not selling people their crap. We did find what we were looking for at a place not too far from Chichester: GR Harris scrap yard. They also got a huge kick out of how ridiculous what we’re doing is, and they managed to find 2 spare rims and fitting for the car and it was only 60 BP total. Not too shabby. Here’s our friend Curly doing his thing.
Once we got everything done we headed for the launch location: Goodwood race track. Goodwood is quite famous in this area and the UK in general for doing some pretty classy events. Of course there is nothing classy about the Mongol Rally, but it’s cool that they let the Adventurists host the event and let all the teams camp there. We got there pretty late in the day so there were a ton of teams that were already there hanging out. Rows and rows of ridiculous cars covered in all manner of decoration. You could easily confuse the entire scene for a junkyard. To a certain extent it was, several cars were already broken down which is impressive. It looked like it was going to rain so we quickly got the registration and setting up the tents out of the way. After that we spent the night drinking and mingling with all of the other people crazy enough to join the Mongol Rally. Even ran into another team from Texas!
