Somehow the amount of Guinness we imbibed didn’t affect our morning. Bars close between 12 and 1 though, so maybe that’s it. The goal of the day was to find a mechanic and see how we could get a roof-rack added to our car. We had a mechanic lined up and he had done the rally before so that was going to be splendid. He ended up being a little flaky, or busy (or both) so we decided to just figure it out for ourselves. That’s what the rally is all about!
Oh yeah, the battery. The apartment we were staying at happened to have a tire shop right next to it and they sold batteries. About 100BP (EVERYTHING IS EXPENSIVE HERE) later and we were moving again. It took 2 stops but we found a mechanic, but he wasn’t going to be able to work on the car until Friday. No probem, we’re going to London for 2 days so we’ll just leave it with him. Unfortunately they didn’t want anything to do with the roof rack problem. We called around a few places and even drove to a scrap yard (who nicely told us to f*** off) but no such luck. Enter Mitch Walker, finder of roof racks.
He called a metal fabrication shop just out of town and they told us to come by because they didn’t know what we were talking about. We showed them a few pictures and described how simple it would be, and Mitch was going on and on about angle iron…anyway they said sure looks easy. We had to leave the car with them that day though, which means on Friday we’ll have to be back down that way (2.5 hour train ride) early enough to pick it up and bring it to the mechanic to do a basic checkup. Friday is a later problem, let’s go to London.
One of the other ralliers was hosting a trivia thing at a German bar downtown, and since he was nice enough to let us use his address to send our car registration paperwork (Thanks Alex!) we decided to go. We also wanted to go meet some other ralliers, and it doesn’t hurt that this place sells giant steins of German beer. Yum.
We won trvia. It was really tempting to chant USA! USA! but we had two British teammates. What’s really awesome is that we won by half a point because the 2nd place team didn’t specify Terminator 2, they just wrote Terminator. Pffffff. Hasta la vista losers! Kidding, everyone was super nice and we got about 17 of our 500 hugs we committed to doing. We got a free 30BP bar tab which we used to buy this monstrosity.
There were 2 Danish teams playing at the table next to us. They did horribly, though to be fair I think they gave up after 5 questions and decided to focus on drinking. All 19-20 year olds (we are so old) but they were a lot of fun so we joined them after that to hit a few places around London. We had nothing to do but be tourists the next day so we made a night of it with our new Danish friends. Fun fact: In Denmark you can buy beer at a grocery store when you’re 15. That’s crazy.
